Unmuted by David Andrew Tittle
Introduction
Unmuted is a beautiful mixture of memoir and poetry, unfurling the complexities of identity and society.
My Rating- ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Major Themes
Most of the poems revolve around topics such as identity, trauma, loss, and belonging. They do not shy away from putting light upon issues of race, family, masculinity, and privilege through vivid imagery and openness. The honesty in the words is impeccable.
Style and Voice
The bilingual writing makes the collection unique. The words are raw and conversational. The confessions portrayed in the poems are full of emotions, such as of anger, sadness, nostalgia, etc.
Standout Moments
The poems that touched me very well include Geometry, Mixed Metaphors and The Cast Iron Pan.
Final Thoughts
The book is more of a memoir with poetry. The poems are very personal, raw, and most importantly, powerful. The words penetrate deep into the heart, making it relatable to the readers. The use of Spanish phrases along with English made it unique. Overall, a good read.
